After doing a project, yesterday, on ‘Scriveners and the Development of The Printing Press’ (a good excuse to start reading Cynthia Harnett’s “A Load of Unicorn” together), looking at illuminated letters and calligraphy, we had a go at embroidering some of our illuminated letter designs onto linen.

I was quite impressed with what the children have done.  I’ve been wanting to explore embroidery a bit more since I found a book of it at Granny’s.  So yesterday got me messing around and expanding the repertoire of stitches that I learnt at primary school, when I did a project on ‘The Bayeaux Tapestry’.

I didn’t do an illuminated letter.  I’ve just been exploring stitches, but I’ve concluded that I don’t think I have the patience to pursue this creative craze much further!

Cynthia Harnett is great. I just re-read “The Wool Pack”.

There was a programme about Caxton on R4 this morning, or was it yesterday… Recently anyway. It might be on the website…
